The Hypnotist

by Dorothea Barth 2009

Inspired by the Leonard Cohen Concert, Friday, November 13, 2009 in San Jose, CA at the HP Pavilion
Written on 11/15/09; last revised on 11/16/09

Hypnotized in solitude
For decades now I soar
Didn't think I'd see you
Till now, with thousands more

Flashback to a stadium
It's summer '67
"Beatles you may hear, not have!
Your fiddle is your heaven"

We have more longevity
With worship I was through
Introduced by mutual friends
Have you heard Cohen too?

Spellbound for three hours strong
Row sixteen, not so far
Stood with all your other friends
Desiring more than more

Fretting fierce about my greed
This man deserves his peace!
When at last you take your leave
I wave, resist, release

Wonder what I'd say to you
If we met on the street
Canter's or on Fairfax
Tongue tightly tied, I'd greet

Holding you in such esteem
Might quell our dialogue
Fool am I to write this verse
To pierce my muting fog

Once did I communicate
While fleeing from red sands
Delighted that you answered
Your letter 's in my hands

Thanks for the inspiration
Your words, your voice, your song
With my Bohemian violin
I must meander on

My crucible not Montreal
But North Sea's great unrest
Nor honed was I in Hydra
But Heartland, then the West

I once was young enough for you,
But that's no longer true
So I will play my own song now
Allegro, sweet, or blue

Your spell will surely linger
Past meetings we have missed
A guide to unknown sands and shores
Where grew the hypnotist
